Air conditioners make plenty of normal operating sounds. A brief click at startup, the rush of air through your vents, and a steady hum from the outdoor unit usually aren’t reasons to worry.

Pay closer attention when a sound is new, suddenly louder, persistent, or accompanied by another problem, such as weak cooling, unusual smells, ice buildup, or trouble starting the system.

You know what your AC normally sounds like. If that suddenly changes, it’s worth figuring out why.

1. Squealing or Screeching
